FAQ – What is the difference between a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) and a full Class 5 License?

With a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL), you must obey certain driving restrictions, including:

  • you cannot drive with more people than there are seat belts in your vehicle
  • a GDL license will be suspended at 8 demerit points
  • blood alcohol level of the driver must be 0%
  • Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 license upgrades are not allowed
  • a GDL driver cannot be the accompanying driver to a learner

When you upgrade to a full Class 5 driver’s license, these restrictions are removed. In order to upgrade, you must:

  • drive for two years with a Class 5 GDL with no suspensions in the last year
  • be at least 18 years of age
  • take a Class 5 advanced road test through an Alberta Registry agent

The experienced instructors at Globe can help improve your driving skill set no matter how little or how long you have been driving.

Testimonials

“Globe Driving School is one of the great learning experience I had in my life. They are well organized and having great facilities for learning driving for any classes. Faculty members are well and up to date with the latest knowledge. They are willing to help all to learn as per our own level of learning. They have an amazing yard facility which gives us ample opportunity to earn driving experience with semi-tractor and trailers. I wish they will keep this good work training more Calgarian’s to be safe driver.
